Session 1: Needs, Wants and Scarcity

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will define the vocabulary terms needs, wants, decision and scarcity.

Students will choose what they need for a healthy life and what they want in their lives.

Students will explain why people work to get money.

Students will explain why families have to make choices about ways they spend their money. 

Students will learn how saving money allows people to buy what they want. 

Students will learn how to make good decisions. 

HOMEWORK

Create a poster of things you need and want in your life. Be ready to share it with the class next time.  

Session 2: Goods and Services

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will define the vocabulary words buy, sell, goods, services and volunteers. 

Students will discover how goods and services occur in different communities and on the internet. 

Students will analyze jobs in goods and services industries. 

Students will learn Thanh Lam's very successful small business in Hawaii.  

HOMEWORK

What goods and services are your neighborhood? Make a chart listing all the goods and services in your community. Be ready to share your list with the class next time.  

Session 3: Buy, Trade and Save

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will define the vocabulary words cost and save.

Students will understand people make buying choices by looking at the cost of things they want to buy.

Students will identify when your should buy or trade.

Students will learn how to make good choices when buying sometimes they want or need.

Students will learn how to save money for what they want to buy.

Students will practice reading a picture graph.

HOMEWORK

You can start saving money. Let's create a piggy bank and start saving your money. Don't quit saving after this class ends. Your money will start to add up in no time. 

Session 4: All Kinds of Jobs

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will define the vocabulary words worker and factory.

Students will understand why people have jobs.

Students will explain what people do with the money they earn from their job.

Students will identify jobs in the service and goods industry.

Students will describe what goods are made in factories. 

Students will comprehend how a person's dreams and talents can help them to choose a career. 

HOMEWORK

What are some of the different types of jobs in your community? Complete the different-types-of-jobs.pdf. What do you want to be when you grow up? Draw a picture of you working in your future career. Be ready to share both papers with the class in the next session. 

Session 5: Getting Food to Market

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will define the vocabulary words machine, seller, buyer and compass rose.

Students will read the story "Stone Soup" and discuss its meaning.  

Students will examine how oranges become the orange juice that can be bought in the store.

Students will examine the relationship between sellers and buyers. 

Students will understand why trade routes are important to buyers and sellers. 

Students will practice using a compass rose on a map.
