Session 1: Friends Help Friends

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Help! A Story of Friendship" by Holly Keller and "Crayons" by Helen H. Moore.

Students will compare/contrast fantasy and poetry genres.

Students will analyze elements in the story and poem. 

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify the base word in a plural word. 

Students will use visualization to follow the plot in a story.

Students will compare words with the same short vowel sounds. 

Students will determine when an action took place based on the spelling of the action word. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a poem. 

Session 2: Families Around the World

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Big Red Lollipop" by Rukhsana Khan and "A Look at Families" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast realistic fiction and expository text genres.

Students will analyze elements in the stories. 

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify words based on their short vowel sound. 

Students will add -s or -es to make a word plural.

Students will determine the root word based on the removal of a word's ending. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a paragraph. 

 

Session 3: Pets Are Our Friends

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Not Norman" by Kelly Bennett and "My Puppy" by Aileen Fisher.

Students will compare/contrast fiction and poetry genres

Students will analyze elements in the stories

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will write words with the cl, dr, sk, sl and st blends.

Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of an unknown word in a sentence. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a paragraph. 

Session 4: Animals Need Our Care

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Lola an Tiva: An Unlikely Friendship" by Juliana, Isabella and Craig Hatkoff and "Animal Needs" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast narrative nonfiction and expository text genres.

Students will analyze elements in the stories

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will write words that have short or long a vowel sounds.

Students will write words with the -ed and -ing endings.

Students will determine the meaning of the word by separating the root word and ending.

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a paragraph. 

Session 5: Time For Kids

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Families Working Together" by Time For Kids and "Why We Work" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will describe what makes a text an expository text.  

Students will analyze elements in the stories

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify words with the short i and long i sounds spelled i_e.

Students will edit sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization and possessive noun. 

Students will determine the meaning of the word by separating the root word and ending.

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details.

Students will analyze a paragraph.
