Session 1: Tornadoes!

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

What is a tornado? Students explore the different types of nonsupercell tornado and compare/contrast them with supercell tornados. How does a tornado form? Students will discover how supercell thunderstorm tornados form. We'll examine the anatomy of a supercell thunderstorm and learn some amazing facts about tornados.

HOMEWORK

Read and answer the questions in tornado-science.pdf. Complete the Tornado-fill-in-the-blank.pdf Be prepared to discuss your homework in the next session. 

Session 2: Tornado Alley, Fajita Scale and Tornado Safety 

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will discuss the answers from their homework. The class will learn the location of Tornado Alley and how it shifts throughout the year due to climate changes. We'll practice our making skills by completing the TornadoAlley.pdf. Students will learn how tornados are measured using the Enhanced Fajita Scale. We'll complete the MeasuringTornados.doc. The class will learn how to prepare for tornados and what to do if they encounter one.

Complete the ReadySetPrepare.pdf with your family. Be prepareed to discuss your homework in the next session. 

Session 3: Storm Chasing and Deadly Tornados

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will discuss the answers from their homework. The class will learn the difference between a storm spotter and a storm chaster. We'll discover what it takes to become a storm chaser. We'll take a look at some of the most deadliest tornados in the United States and how the warning system had decreased deaths from tornados. The students will learn how one woman who lost her legs in a tornado has turned her amputation into an endeavor to bring hope to children throughout the world.
