Screech Owls by Avian Rojas (Age: 14)

There are many different types of Screech Owls. My favorite is the Eastern Screech Owl. They are very tiny and adorable. There are at least 21 different species of Screech Owls and they come in many different colors. Most of these owls are between 7 and 10 inches tall. They also have a wingspan of 18 through 24 inches. They can be easily recognized by their feather tufts set on the top of their head. Like other owls, females tend to be larger than males.

Screech owls like to live in a specific place. They are native to North, Central, and South America. Since these birds nest in tree cavities, they must live in or near forests. These birds need old trees because old trees are more likely to have larger hollows for their home. They can be found in woodlands, suburban parks, forests, wetlands, orchards, and meadows. These birds live in many places.

Screech Owls eat many things. They eat many things because they eat whatever they can catch. They eat, insects, mice, bats, and other small mammals. They use their sharp talons and curved beaks just like larger owl species. Because they are so small if prey cannot be swallowed whole they will carry it back to their nest to avoid having it stolen. Screech owls are very interesting animals.
