Session 1: Volcanoes
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
What is a volcano? What is the different stages of a volcano? How do volcanoes erupt? What are the different types of volcanoes and how do their eruptions effect modern society? Students will answer these questions and explore how modern science is protecting those who live near volcanoes. Students will learn about the eruption of the 1980 Mount Saint Helens eruptions and current Hawaiian volcanoes.
Session 2: Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn the location of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 in relation to the village of Pompeii, Italy. Our class will explore the history, geography and culture of Pompeii. Students will learn about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the preservation of Pompeii caused by the eruptions.
Session 3: Archaeology and Preservation
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
What is archaeology and science teaching us about volcanoes? Has Mount Vesuvius ever erupted again? Will it erupt again? Students will answer these questions and more.
