Session 1: Symbolism

MATERIALS:

Pencil 

Paper

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

What are symbols and how are they important to the development of human communication? Students will learn the difference between pictographs, petroglyphs and pictograms. They will discover the time periods each of these forms were being created and what was going on in the world at that given time.

Session 2: Petroglyphs

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will learn how to create a petroglyph. They will examine several petroglyphs from around the world and try to decipher the meaning of each example. Students will learn about French cave art. 

HOMEWORK

Create a Cave Painting telling a story with petroglyphs. Be ready to present to the class in the next session.

 

Session 3: Pictograms

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will learn how pictographs shaped the languages of the world. They will examine the development of Egyptian hieroglyphs and learn to write their name in hieroglyphs. Students will examine how Pictographs was the foundation of all written languages. Students will create their own symbolic language, create a message and share it with the class.
