Session 1: Advertisements

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

What is persuasive writing? Students will learn how advertisements use persuasive writing to convince people to buy their items. We will look at several advertisements in print and in video then discuss their elements. What makes you want to buy those items? Students will learn what a target market is and how each advertisement targets that specific group. Students will practice creating advertisements.

HOMEWORK:

Create a product and a print ad to sell that product on poster board. Be ready to present your print ad to the group in the next session.

Session 2: Convince Me

Students will present their advertisements to the class.

Students will learn how to put together a convincing, opinion-based essay.

Students will review examples.

HOMEWORK:

A wealthy donor plans to build a new facility that will benefit young people in your area. It could be a swimming pool, a theater, a skate park, an art school, or any other facility that would provide young people with constructive ways to spend their time. The donor is not sure what kind of facility would be most useful. Write a formal letter to the donor in which you identify the type of facility you would like built and persuade her that it is the best choice. Be sure to support your opinion with convincing reasons and evidence. Load the completed letter on Basecamp.
