Session 1: Advertisements

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

What is persuasive writing? Students will learn how advertisements use persuasive writing to convince people to buy their items. We will look at several advertisements in print and in video then discuss their elements. What makes you want to buy those items? Students will learn what a target market is and how each advertisement targets that specific group. Students will practice creating advertisements.

HOMEWORK:

Create a product and a print ad to sell that product on poster board. Be ready to present your print ad to the group in the next session.

Session 2: But I Really Want It!

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will present their advertisements to the class. Students will hear the story "I Wanna Iquana" and "I Wanna My Own Room" by Karen Kaufman Orloff. We will discuss what makes Alex's letters to his parents so convincing. Students will chose whether they want a certain pet or a new room. We will learn the writing process. Students will learn the different parts of a letter and how to write a letter. We will be surprising our parent(s) with the letter at the end of this course.

HOMEWORK: Create a convincing advertisement for your new pet or bedroom.

HOMEWORK: Write a letter to persuade your parents to buy you a new pet or give you your own bedroom. Bring your letters to class.

Session 4: Editing Your Letters
