Important

I will provide two booklets to you once you have enrolled your students in the class. These booklets will be referred as LHU (Little House Unit) and LHBW. Please print both of them out but do not give them to your student unless requested. I will let you know which pages you will need to give to your student. Do not allow your student to work ahead. Student pages needed will be listed in each session.

Session 1: Pre-Reading Skills and Author Background

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

BOOK: 

Students will learn the skills it takes to be a good reader. We will make predictions about what we think will happen based on the pictures in the book and the cover. Students will be introduced to Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family members. The class will conduct an author study about Laura Ingalls Wilder. We will examine what life might have been like for a pioneer and the setting of the book.

ENRICHMENT (SKILL - AUTHOR STUDY): 

We will talk about Laura Ingalls Wilder coloring page. Students may color it after class.

Session 2: Little House in the Big Woods

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

VOCABULARY:

Short Vowels and Compound Words The students will learn vocabulary words, their meanings and usage in chapter 1. We will discuss short vowels and compound words. We will fill out page 9-10 in the LHBW booklet.

ENRICHMENT (SKILL - FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS): 

Students will be introduced to what informative texts are. They will use words such as first, second, then, next and last to write the instructions on how to create their own corn cob dolls.

Session 3: Winter Days and Winter Nights

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out page 9 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

VOCABULARY:

Long Vowels and Base Words The students will learn vocabulary words, their meanings and usage in chapter 2. We will discuss long vowels and base words that were used in the chapter. We will fill out pages 11-12 in the LHBW booklet

ENRICHMENT (SKILL - COMPREHENSION):

 Students will watch a demonstration of how to churn butter. They will read the text Making Butter then work together to answer the comprehension questions.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 3 (The Long Rifle)

Session 4: The Long Rifle

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out pages 10 -11 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet and page 14 in the LHBW.

VOCABULARY:

The students will learn vocabulary words, their meanings and usage in chapter 3. We will discuss syllables. We will fill out page 13 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (SKILL - TAKING NOTES):

The class will learn how to take good notes. Students will watch a video about screech owls and take notes about them. We will discuss what we have learned about screech owls.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will learn what a Venn Diagram is and how to use it. We will fill out pages 12 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

VOCABULARY:

The students will learn vocabulary words, their meanings and usage in chapter 4. We will discuss how to classify words. We will fill out page 15 in the LHBW

ENRICHMENT (READING A NEWSPAPER/NEWSLETTER):

The class will learn how to read a newspaper/newsletter. Students will chose an article in the christmas.pdf to read then they will tell the class what the articles was about.

HOMEWORK

Read Chapter 5 (Sundays)

NOTE: The Story of Grandpa's Sled and the Pig is part of the chapter.

Session 6: Sundays

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will talk about cause and effect. We will explore different examples of cause and effect in the chapter. We will fill out pages 13 of the LHU (Little House Unit) and page 16 in the LHBW booklets. Students will create their own examples of cause and effect.

ENRICHMENT (RESEARCH):

Student will learn research. The class we will research pa's fiddle and pioneer music.

HOMEWORK

Read Chapter 6 (Two Big Bears)

NOTE: The Story of Pa and the Bear In the Way is part of the chapter.

 

Session 7: Two Big Bears

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out pages 14 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

VOCABULARY:

Students will learn with a synonym is and how to use them in literature. We will fill out page 15 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (USING A THESAURUS):

Students will learn how to use a thesaurus to find the synonyms and antonyms of words. We will play Thesaurus Roll-A-Word (located in the DiceGamesReading).

HOMEWORK

Read Chapter 7 (Sugar Snow) 

Complete ONLY Question 3 on page 15 of LHU (Little House Unit) booklet. We will be sharing the recipes with the class and compile a class cookbook.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out pages 15 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

VOCABULARY:

Students will learn how to use context clues while reading a text. They will also learn how to classify word groups. We will fill out pages 18-21 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (HISTORY):

Students will learn how the pioneers made maple syrup.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out pages 24 in the LHBW booklet.

VOCABULARY:

Students will review synonyms. We will fill out pages 22-23 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (HISTORY):

Students will learn about square dancing. They will learn basic square dance moves.

COMPREHENSION:

Students will review antonyms. We will fill out page 25 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (HISTORY):

Students will take a virtual tour of a pioneer town and compare/contrast it with their hometown using a Venn Diagram. p.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will discuss how to use our critical thinking skills when solving a problem. We will fill out pages 17-18 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

VOCABULARY:

Students will learn how to place words in alphabetical order based on one or two of the same letters. We will discuss how to choose the right meaning word when needed. We will fill out pages 26-28 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (SCIENCE):

Students will learn what causes the seasons and how the sun affects the temperatures.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter.

WRITING:

Students will write in the narrative form about something they did and were punished for that they deserved. They will write their narrative on page 19 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet. Students will also write a journal entry on page 30 of the LHBW with a guided prompt from the book.

VOCABULARY:

Students will learn how to use a dictionary. We will fill out page 30 in the LHBW.

ENRICHMENT (USING A DICTIONARY):

We will play DICTIONARY ROLL-A -WORD (Located in the DiceGamesReading)

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter. We will fill out pages 20 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

ENRICHMENT (HISTORY):

Students will learn how agricultural machines and tools have changed since the pioneer days. They will watch a video showcasing how the pioneers farmed their land. The class will read about the innovation of agricultural machines and complete activities on pages 5 - 8 of machines 2 PDF

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

COMPREHENSION:

The class will discuss what happened in the chapter.

VOCABULARY:

Students will recall a character they liked and write about them. Students will learn how to write a book recommendation. We will fill out page 33-34 in the LHBW.

WRITING:

Students will write in the expository form on page 21 in the LHU (Little House Unit) booklet.

ENRICHMENT (SCIENCE):

Students will learn about the various animals that are found in the book such as deer, bear, bees and owls. They will chose their favorite animal that was mentioned and tell why they liked that animal.
