Course Description

This course will introduce students to topics relating to human sexuality. Topics to be covered include consent, communication, basic anatomy, different sexual orientations/identifications, masturbation, sexually transmitted infections, gender identity, peer pressure, pregnancy and birth, contraception, puberty, emotional intimacy, boundaries, media portrayal of sex, discrimination and harassment, and options after a pregnancy. Students will have the option at all times to ask questions either aloud during class or privately to the instructor.

Materials

Students will need a copy of The “What’s Happening to My Body” Book for...Revised Third Edition. This series offers both a book for boys and one for girls. Choose whichever one fits your child. We will be using both male and female versions of the book in class, but I will provide excerpts on those days.

   Session 1: : Medical Terminology and Communication

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will be introduced to medical terminology and given an opportunity to submit questions (aloud or anonymously) that they would like to have answered during the course.

Students will begin learning the basics of open communication.

Session 2: Bodily Autonomy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss bodily autonomy and consent.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 2

 

Session 3: Communication and Consent

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss the importance of consent and open communication.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 3

Write a paragraph about a time (personal or otherwise) about a consent violation and how you felt afterwards.

Session 4: Male Anatomy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will study the male anatomy

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 4

Complete and submit the Male Anatomy worksheet on Classcraft.

 

Session 5: Female Anatomy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will study the female anatomy

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 5

Complete and submit the Female Anatomy worksheet on Classcraft.

 

Session 6: Puberty - Male Physical Changes

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss the physical changes that the male body goes through during puberty.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 6

Session 7: Puberty - Female Physical Changes

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss the physical changes that the female body goes through during puberty.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 7

 

Session 8: Puberty - Emotional Changes

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about the emotional changes that occur during puberty.

HOMEWORK:

Read Chapter 8

Write a paragraph about some of the emotional changes that occur during puberty.

 

Session 9: Recap

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will summarize the information covered so far, and ask any questions they have. This will also be a time to expand upon any material the student previously struggled with.

Session 10: Gender Identity

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about different gender identities.

HOMEWORK:

Students will complete the Inner and Outer Identities worksheet.

 

Session 11: Sexual Orientations

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about different gender orientations.

HOMEWORK:

Complete the “Myth or Fact” and “Who Do I Know” worksheets.

Write at least 1 page exploring and explaining your personal identity, and how you came to the realization that you identified the way you do. This WILL NOT be shared with the class, only the teacher.

Session 12: Stereotypes

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about different stereotypes.

HOMEWORK:

List 10 stereotypes you see in your everyday life this week.

Write a 2-3 paragraphs about where these stereotypes come from, and whether you feel they are reasonable.

 

Session 13: Sexual Harassment and Discrimination

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about sexual harassment and discrimination.

HOMEWORK:

Write a paragraph about a time you experienced or witnessed harassment or discrimination.

Complete Sexual Bullying Statements worksheet

 

Session 14: Media Portrayal of Sex and Intimacy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss media portrayal of sex, intimacy, relationships, and body image.

HOMEWORK:

Find 10 examples (TV, billboards, magazines, internet ads, etc) of media sexualization of men and women (5 of men and 5 of women)

Write 2-3 paragraphs about how these example made you feel when you encountered them.

Session 15: Peer Pressure

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss peer pressure.

HOMEWORK:

Write a paragraph about a time you experience, witnessed, or engaged in peer pressure.

 

Session 16: Relationships

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss healthy and unhealthy relationships.

HOMEWORK:

Complete “What Would I Expect” worksheet

Build a Relationship Pyramid (worksheet)

 

Session 17: Emotional Intimacy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about emotional intimacy.

HOMEWORK:

Complete the Intimacy Chart

Session 18: Boundaries

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss how to set and maintain healthy boundaries

HOMEWORK:

Create a list of 10 boundaries (either personal or relationship) that you want to set in your life.

Write a dialogue of a conversation between yourself and another person (fictional or real) where you explain and enforce your boundaries.

Session 19: Consent

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Students will discuss the importance of consent and open communication.

HOMEWORK:

Practice consent dialogue with a parent, sibling, or friend. 

Session 20: Masturbation

LESSON OBJECTIVES

Students will learn about masturbation.

Session 21: STIs

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about Sexually Transmitted Infections

HOMEWORK:

Research STI (assigned in class) and prepare a 5-minute presentation on it. 

 

Session 22: Contraception and Abstinence

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about contraception and abstinence. 

HOMEWORK:

Write a paragraph explaining which contraception method you think you would prefer.

 

Session 23: Intercourse

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about the mechanics of intercourse.

HOMEWORK:
Write a list of at least 5 questions you still have but don’t feel comfortable asking during class.

Session 24: Pregnancy

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about pregnancy. 

HOMEWORK:    

Research a pregnancy complication that women can face and write a 1-2 page paper about it, due before the last class.

Session 25: Birth

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about the birth process. 

HOMEWORK:    

Write a paragraph about which delivery method/place you would choose.

Session 26: Adoption, Abortion, and Raising a Baby

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about different options for pregnancy.

HOMEWORK:    

Write a paragraph about why people might choose each option, and why they might choose different options at different points in their life.

Session 27: Questions and presentations

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will present their STI information (if there was not sufficient class time previously).

We will address any questions that students still have about any topic covered during the course.
