Session 1: At School

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Nat and Sam" by Pat Cummings, "Rules at School" and "Jack the Cat" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast realistic fiction and nonfiction genres.

Students will describe the connections they have with the stories. 

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will identify words with the short a phonemic sounds. 

Students will place high-frequency words in the correct sentences so the sentence makes sense. 

Students will practice writing words with a short a phonemic sounds in them. 

Students will add -s to the end of an action word sentences with he, she or it. 

Students will identify key details in a photograph and write about them in a sentence. 

Session 2: Where I Live

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Go Pip" by Tomek Bogacki, "I Live Here" and "Pip and Tip" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast fantasy and nonfiction genres

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will compare/contrast what it is like to live in the city or country.

Students will identify words with the short i phonemic sounds. 

Students will place high-frequency words in the correct sentences so the sentence makes sense. 

Students will practice writing words with a short i phonemic sounds in them. 

Students will identify and write words with double blended consonants. 

Students will explain why authors sometimes use bold print in a text.

 

Session 3: Our Pets

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Flip" by Ezra R. Tanaka, "What Pets Need" and "Kim and Flick" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast fantasy and nonfiction genres

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will explain why "Flip" is a fantasy story.

Students will describe what different types of pets need. 

Students will sequence what a character does in "Flip."

Students will identify words that have I-blends.  

Students will place high-frequency words in the correct sentences so the sentence makes sense. 

Students will practice writing words with I-blends. 

Students will add -s to plural nouns. 

Students will explain why labels are important features on a photograph or picture in a text.

Session 4: Let's Be Friends

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Friends" by Nina Crews, "There Are Days and There Are Days" by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers and "What Can It Do" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will compare/contrast nonfiction and poetry genres

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will identify words that have short o phonemic sounds in them.  

Students will place high-frequency words in the correct sentences so the sentence makes sense. 

Students will practice writing words with short o phonemic sounds. 

Students will make a list of words in alphabetical order. 

Students will identify words that rhyme.

 

Session 5: Let's Be Friends

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Move It!", "Using Diagrams" and "Kids Can Move" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will describe why a story would be considered nonfiction.

Students will identify key details in the stories. 

Students will identify words that have r- and s- blends. 

Students will place high-frequency words in the correct sentences so the sentence makes sense. 

Students will practice writing words with r- and s- blends

Students will identify words in a sentence that are possessives. 

Students will use the right words to label a diagram.
