IMPORTANT NOTES

Welcome to Capstone! This program is the final step in learning an important career in the publishing world. This program is a little more fast paced in order to give you a feel for the reality of the position of Editor in a publishing house. As your teacher and guide, I intend to help you as much as you need with the detailed process of editing, but also giving you space to spread your wings. Now that you have made it to this point, you will work off a detailed editing checklist.

As we go through this program together, we will schedule and attend a weekly Zoom meeting to review your progress and any questions you may have. I am available to you whenever you need me, but if you feel we need to meet as a class more than once a week, we can make those arrangements. Also, if you need any one-on-one time, let me know as well.

Please note this course is only available to students who have completed Senior Editor.

For this program we will be using the novella, “Sleep Tight, Forevermore” by Delfin Espinosa in Basecamp.

Sessions

Session 1: Initial Read Through

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Read through the novella first. If something out of place or context catches your eye, then make a note of it. The purpose of reading through first is to help you get a feel for the story, the characters, the plot, and the narrator’s voice.

HOMEWORK:

Finish the first read through.

Session 2: The Checklist

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Go over the detailed checklist to get a visual on what you need to be looking for on your editing read through. The great thing about this checklist is that it includes links with examples to help you better understand what you are looking for. Be sure you remember to save all your hard work into Basecamp.

HOMEWORK:

Read through the manuscript, looking for the checklist items we grouped together in class.

Session 3: Grouping

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

We will review the edits you have done so far and answer any questions you may have.

We will group five (5) more checklist items together and work through the edits. Be sure you remember to save all your hard work to Basecamp.

HOMEWORK:

Read through the manuscript, looking for the checklist items we grouped together in class.

Session 4: Review and Ask

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

OK, let’s review what you have and answer any questions. We will group five (5) more checklist items for the new week. Be sure you are pacing yourselves and reading carefully. Also, a good editor knows when to step away and take a break. This clears your mind and gives you better insight when you come back to the manuscript. Be sure you remember to save all your hard work in Basecamp.

HOMEWORK:

Keep working through the manuscript using the next 5 checklist items we grouped together in class.

Session 5: Review

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

We will review the edits you have and answer any questions. We will group five (5) more checklist items together for the new week. Be sure you remember to save all your hard work.

Session 6: The Final Stretch

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

We are getting to the final stretch! We will group the final checklist items together for the last pass through. Editing is long and tedious, but rewarding in the end when you know you have helped an author put forth their best work possible. Be sure you remember to save all your hard work in Basecamp.

HOMEWORK:

Keep up the pace and finish the last set of edits, looking for the last checklist items we grouped together in class.

Session 7: Final Look

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

Time to wrap it up in a nice bow! Give everything one last pass-over. Make sure you have reviewed it all with a fine-toothed comb. You should all be proud of the work you have done! Be sure to save your work in Basecamp for review and feedback.
