Session 1: Animals and Nature

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Sled Dogs Run" by Jonathan London and "Cold Dog, Hot Fox" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will summarize the plot of Sled Dogs Run.

Students will analyze elements in Sled Dogs Run and Cold Dog, Hot Fox. 

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will compare words with short and long o sounds. 

Students will create new words with short o sound and -ed, -ing endings. 

Students will describe what happens at the beginning, middle and end of a story.  

Students will determine what happens in a story based on visual clues. 

Students will determine the meaning of a word based on the prefixes re-, un- and dis-. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details.

Students will analyze a story.

Session 2: Animals in Stories

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Wolf! Wolf!" by John Rocco and "Cinderella and Friends" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will summarize the plot of Wolf! Wolf!

Students will analyze elements in Wolf! Wolf! and Cinderella and Friends.  

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify words based on short and long u sounds. 

Students will describe the problem, steps to solution and the solution in a story.

Students will analyze a fable. 

Students will determine the meaning of a word with the suffixes -ful and -ly. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details.

Students will analyze a story.

 

Session 3: Animal Habitats

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out" by April Pulley Sayre and "At Home in the River" by the Wonders Reading Program

Students will identify the main topic and supporting details.

Students will analyze elements in Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out and At Home in the River.

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify words with the soft c and soft g sounds.

Students will analyze a nonfictional text. 

Students will determine the meaning of a word with the suffixes -ful and -ly. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a paragraph. 

Session 4: Baby Animals

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Baby Bears" by Bobbie Kalman and "From Caterpillar to Butterfly" by Wonders Reading Program.

Students will identify the main topic and supporting details.

Students will analyze elements in Baby Bears and From Caterpillar to Butterfly.

Students will identify words with a consonant digraph.

Students will determine the meaning of a word with the suffixes -ful and -less. 

Students will analyze a nonfictional text. 

Students will use clues in a sentence to determine the meaning of a multi-meaning word. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details. 

Students will analyze a paragraph. 

Session 5: Animals in Poems

LESSON OBJECTIVES: 

Students will read "Beeetles" by Monica Shannon and "Gray Goose" by Julie Larios.

Students will analyze important elements in poems.

Students will complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

Students will identify words with the scr, spl, spr. str, shr and thr blends. 

Students will use clues in a sentence to determine the meaning of a multi-meaning word. 

Students will revise a paragraph so it is longer with more details.

Students will analyze a paragraph.
